What to Consider For a New Heating System

If your heating system has begun to require one repair after another, it may be time to consider replacing it. The money that you are spending on repairs could be better spent on upgrading to a more energy efficient heating system that could potentially reduce your heating costs up to 30 percent.

When to Consider Replacing

It is often more cost effective to replace your heating system if:

• The cost of repairs is more than 33 percent of the cost to replace

• You have a heat pump that is more than 15 years old

• You have a furnace or boiler that is more than 15 years old

• Your heating bills continue to rise month-to-month

• The rooms in your home do not seem as warm as they used to be

• Your current system has become increasingly noisier

If your heating system has been professionally serviced over the years, your heating system could potentially outlive its life expectancy. However, most heating contractors will recommend replacement when the system has reached the three-quarter mark of its expected life. Depending upon the severity of the repairs needed, such as a pilot light replacement versus the cost to replace an induction motor in an older furnace; it would usually be advisable to replace the system.

Today’s heating systems are required to be much more energy efficient than those that were manufactured just a decade ago. The higher the AFUE rating for a furnace or boiler, the more energy efficient it will be. In the case of a heat pump, the higher the HSPF, SEER and ERR ratings, the more energy efficient that will be. This means you will spend less money each month heating your home.

Newer heating systems are much quieter than older systems because of the new technology available with variable speed blower motors. These motors allow the system to run at low and high speed, which helps to keep your home more comfortable with providing just the right amount of heat.
